Steal a laptop? Here’s a good reason NOT to…

Thursday 23 March 2006 @ 5:23 pm

The Bubba Boy who ripped off this professor’s laptop has found himself in the worst of all worlds…no where to go, no where to hide, no way to back out of this nightmare. Pay close attention to just exactly what Professor did to find and isolate the culprit (thanks to break.com for sharing).

Like Survival Newsletters?…Have I got a deal for you…

Monday 20 March 2006 @ 1:09 am

I just happen to produce a semi-monthly newsletter for Live Free USA. Live Free has been around for years, and I’ve been doing the newsletter for just over a year now, after taking over the reigns from Chris Nyerges.

Visit the website, and download a pdf version of the last two copies, and let me know what you think.

I’ve done many different kinds of newsletters over the years, from home computers, to postal employees, and more. I’m finishing up the final touches for my very own SurvivalRing Newsletter, which will be a full blown printed and mailed version, for paying subscribers. Yes, there will be digital copies available, including archives, and special deals on what I have to share (including freebies for members only).

Have fun reading and learning…

On the attack someone is…

Saturday 4 February 2006 @ 5:12 am

…as Yoda would say.

I’ve received a nice letter from a national preparedness organization. Telling me to stop doing something I’ve been doing for 4 years. I’ll tell more later. I’ve responded to them with a nice letter (yes, a NICE letter…after all it came from their legal department) asking for clarification on a few issues.

I’ll bring you up to date sometime after the weekend, since NO ONE in DC works on Superbowl Weekend.

Go Cowboys!!!..er..uh..I mean, Go Steelers!!

Creating a Dual Boot desktop

Sunday 22 January 2006 @ 12:05 am

It only took an afternoon, and most of the evening, but I now am the proud owner of a dual boot desktop Pentium 4 computer!

I’ve mentioned my HP 864n a few times on the blog, and this past week I did some major hardware upgrades to it, in the process of bringing it back to life. Windows XP died last August, going into a horrible reboot loop, both in regular and safe mode. I used Knoppix Live linux CD to verify the drive was still good, but had no luck in trying several different methods to fix the boot issue.

Fortunately the next day after the system crashed, I won a nifty little door prize here at Central Wyoming College…a brand new Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop…and I’ve been using it since then.

I picked up a new 200 gig hard drive last week, with intentions of using it as an external USB 2.o storage drive, but then thought how I could use it for something else…while improving on things.

So…installed the 200 gig in the 864n, installed the full recover CD set of 9 cds (full recovery of WinXP MCE, as it came out of the box), and a few other tools. Also installed a new Sony DVD-+RW dual layer burner, and another half a gig of RAM at the same time.

System has been running VERY fast all week. A friend from DC surprised me with the original boxed set of SUSE Linux 10.0 this week, and knowing that it was in the mail, I toyed with the idea of DUAL BOOT!

Going from the included manual, it took only 5 hours (mostly software install time, plus downloads of 160 megs of updates automatically by the install procss). A few reboots, and it’s working…Suse linux 10.0 and WinXP MCE on the boot menu…

All hardware works…including the printer and tv card…network system is all hunky dory…and web access is as fast as I want it to be…1000kb download speeds from my wireless internet access via Wyoming.com.

I’ll keep you updated as I begin to play with Suse…and start looking at some linux multimedia tools to learn about.

Wordpress 2.0 released!

Monday 26 December 2005 @ 5:48 pm

Today, as expected, the newest version of Wordpress, version 2.0, was released. I was download number 1180….out of thousands more to come.

I’ll be working on upgrading this install of WP (v 1.5.2), t0 v.2.0, later this week.

Congrats to the team…what I’ve already seen is EXTREMELY impressive.

Bush Raps Senators on Blocking Patriot Act

Saturday 17 December 2005 @ 11:20 am

Gee…another story about Congress growing some big hairy ones….

Will the constitution win?

Will Americans win, and retain their civil rights?

Will Bush pout?

Stay tuned….

Bush Raps Senators for Blocking Patriot Act, Says They Put Nation’s Safety in Jeopardy
By JENNIFER LOVEN
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Saturday that senators who are blocking renewal of the terrorism-fighting Patriot Act are acting irresponsibly and standing in the way of protecting the country from attack.

President Bush said Saturday that senators who are blocking renewal of the terrorism-fighting Patriot Act are acting irresponsibly and standing in the way of protecting the country from attack.

“In the war on terror, we cannot afford to be without this law for a single moment,” the president said in a live broadcast from the White House of his weekly radio address.

Senate Democrats, with the aid of a handful of Republicans, succeeded Friday in stalling the bill already approved by the House. The vote to advance the measure, 52-47, fell eight votes shy of the 60 votes required to end debate.

“That decision is irresponsible and it endangers the lives of our citizens. The senators who are filibustering must stop their delaying tactics and the Senate must reauthorize the Patriot Act,” Bush said.

Opponents of renewing the law, most of whom are Democrats, argue that it threatens constitutional liberties at home.

Most Republicans and other supporters say the act is essential for protecting the country against terrorists. The law was enacted in the aftermath of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Weapons of Mass (or mouth) Destruction Breathspray

Sunday 4 December 2005 @ 6:57 pm

Here’s a funny little video I wrote and edited a couple of years ago. This one is called Weapons of Mass Destruction Breathspray. I wrote the script in my script/news writing class in a just few minutes, back in 2003 . Then, by chance, my wife needed a video script to create a commercial of some kind for her cinema history class. Pulled this script out, and her classmates shot it one Saturday afternoon. I edited it for them. I think it’s cute…off color, but cute. Enjoy.
