PREPAREDNESS vs. THE MEDIA - Still Asking Questions By Richard A. Fleetwood - May 2001 (From My March 2000 Newsletter) I want to mention that Y2k brought the media of the WORLD to my Virtual doorstep, and my y2k media help page created hundreds of opportunities for millions of people to learn a little bit more about preparedness in general. Well, media is still calling and emailing, though not nearly as frequently. I was interviewed two weeks ago by a writer for an online only magazine as a followup for y2k. I thought it went well, and again I took the opportunity to SHARE the phrase "BE PREPARED".....not "THE END IS NEAR". Each and every one of you reading this has the opportunity to share the vision of FAMILY and COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS with your local media. Send a letter to the editor to ALL your local newspapers, big and small. Call up your local talk radio shows, or even national ones, and discuss the needs for 72 hour kits, food storage, or tornado shelters. Write or call your local TV station asking them to discuss and/or do investigative reports on how to be ready for FUTURE tornado/hurricane/earthquake events, BEFORE the next disaster hits. Of course, take each opportunity to share resources available to all, such as magazines, training groups, books, authors, and yes, even things such as SurvivalRing. The goal of all this? To make the world truly a safer, and better place for all of God's creation. Each of us can be a little bitty cog in the automatic transmission of life, with just a little ambition, a little elbow grease, and a little bit of spunk. You just don't know how far you can go if you REALLY want to. I shudder to think how far I've traveled down this path I've chosen, yet I know I have a bright exciting life of lots of adventure, experiences, and yes, even some grief, to look forward to. Yet, it all started with an idea, a simple plan, and a few small first steps. I'm not famous, I am still broke, and I have as many bills as the next guy, but I'm still married to my high school sweetheart, I've got three intelligent, bright, and loving teenagers, and I am accomplishing things that can and will actually save lives that I will NEVER know about. I am happy, and I like the direction my life is going, and many of you seem to think I am also doing the right things, from all the emails I receive everyday. Life is good, and life is sweet.
