Survivalism...What Is MOST Important?
By Richard A. Fleetwood - May 2001
(From My March 2000 Newsletter)
SURVIVALISM - SELECT ONE
- a)you? b)others? c)EVERYONE
If you spend any time perusing
some of the newsgroups, other sites, or even news stories, you will get the
idea that SURVIVALISM is a lifestyle of keeping ONE'S SELF safe and alive....at
all costs. Some threads in newsgroups cover how to fight your way thru anything,
how to take what you want, how to overcome ANY obstacle to reach your goal
of being the last one alive, and so on. This has been a running topic of
discussion for as long as *I* have been around this genre. I have read loads
of fiction, hundreds of news articles, and Lord knows how many emails from
all over the globe.
My take? Those that think THEY are the most important thing to keep alive
miss the point entirely. Life is what you make it. Its not much of one if
all that's in it is YOU, things for YOU, stuff for YOU, and goals for YOU.
I think survivalism is about keeping EVERYONE safe, in ANY circumstance,
period. Disasters and natural events are a hell of a lot more common than
invasions, wars, big brother attacks, New World Order threats, and the like.
If your house catches fire, what do YOU do? Run out? Make sure ALL your family
gets out? Have a plan that you have PRACTICED with your entire family
beforehand...just in case? Have the tools handy to PUT THE FIRE OUT?
Many things to think about....many possible situations.....many possible
outcomes. Its NOT just you that will be affected. You will be part of it....but
so will your wife, your kids, your parents, your pets, your neighbors, your
public safety workers, your employers, and much more. Note that these are
all PEOPLE. I didn't mention THINGS. THINGS are replaceable, but people are
NOT...especially loved ones. Ok, pets aren't people, but can seem like it...and
they aren't replaceable either. I know...I've lost some truly loved canine
friends over the years.
If you are reading this I KNOW you are interested in PREPARING for things.
It is high time to REALLY prepare for the more common things in life, things
that WILL touch you or your friends in YOUR lifetime. Want me to repeat the
things MY FAMILY has suffered in the past six years ALONE while living in
ONE location? Tornadoes (5), hurricanes (2), lightning strike on the house,
TWO car accidents (hit from behind both times), flooding, house fire,
burglary(2), animal cruelty (one dog poisoned, one shot), wind damage with
120 foot tree falling on the house, AND the 1993 blizzard of the century.
All out of our control completely, yet all affecting us personally with long
term repercussions, and work requiring much time and effort. I will also
mention the fact that I had a gun leveled at me in a drive by assualt while
I delivered mail one day, though no shots were fired.
You don't know when, you don't know why, but you MUST know what. Take the
time to learn hazards that might affect you, and take appropriate measures
to learn how to prepare for these hazards SHOULD they ever occur near you.
Your family will love you all the more for it.
