Things Change...When Others Control  By Richard A. Fleetwood - May 2001 Don't you just hate it when you leave somewhere for just a little bit, and someone comes behind your back and changes things, like hiding your lunch, your coat, or your purse, and not telling you who did it or where they put the "stuff"? I take a few months long sabatical away from my website and look what happens to it...Major functions dependent on 3rd party Online Providers screw things up. Details abound, with solutions under way. Perhaps the biggest change to the entire site is a movement away from advertising and trying to make funds to support the site and all the costs put into it. It just has not made any money, and the tools to try to make funds seem to get in the way of the content. My Amazon.com linkage is virtually the only affiliate I will run now, though I haven't received a check in over a year. Too many ways to get good info thru them, regarding new books, videos and such, so I make it available as a search tool. Other big changes are fewer and smaller graphics. Some content pages in SurvivalRing ARE visually more useful and stunning, and will stay that way, but the rule now is "less is more". Finally, regarding changes, I am making every attempt to provide site functions that actually RUN on my website, instead of on a 3rd party site, such as webring.org, yahoo, and so on. This way, market problems, and 3rd party changes, will have less effect in the future, as far as this site goes. Perhaps you have noticed the NEW site redesign, custom navigation, and myriad other new features on this site. All are to enhance YOUR site experience. For the time being, I have to have the popup advertisements, although I hate them immensely. This site is hosted on HYPERMART, one of many that hosts free sites in exchange for banner advertising. They are one of the FEW sites that allow site owners to set up their OWN CGI programs, which is one of the reasons I chose them. AS soon as I financially able, I will upgrade the host program to remove all of their banners. For the time being, simply MINIMIZE, but do not CLOSE the popup windows, when they open up. They will not bother you nearly as much if you do this. Otherwise, everytime you close them, they will reopen again. First off, NOW ONLINE is the new SurvivalRing Ringlink Ring System, based on a great public domain CGI program called Ringlink. It runs on any server you have a site on that allows you to run your own CGI programs. It offers nearly all the functionality of the Webring.org (now Yahoo!) system, without junk that Yahoo added, the cookies and advanced tracking that they have, and unwanted advertising and other things. It also gives me, the ringmaster full access to ALL functions of the ring, as well as full scalability as improved and upgraded versions become available. The BEST part of Ringlink? I can now host YOUR rings on this site. You can create and manage a ring of your very own, for your site, using the SurvivalRing Ringlink system, at absolutely no cost or obligation. I won't put any conditions on your ring except to ask that it be PREPAREDNESS oriented - survival, preparedness, safety, civil defense, etc. You will be fully responsible for the management of YOUR ring, if you create it. Next, I have created the SurvivalRing TOP 100 Survival Sites List, another CGI based program. This allows you to add an eye-catching banner to your site, linking to the list, and get your site ranked among some of the best preparedness info in the world. If you make the top 5 on the list, your very own banner (need one? I can help you) will appear on the list. Another marketing aid to get your site known to the rest of the world. The new ARTICLES and REVIEWS pages are online, including a page where YOU can send me an article or review YOU have written, to be hosted on this site. This allows you to share your knowledge in certain areas with the rest of the world, whether you have a website or not. It is a service I offer to anyone who wishes to take advantage of it. You retain copywrite, ownership, and byline of the article, all I do is put it online for you. Again, no charge or cost whatsoever. The NEW Civil Defense NOW! site is online, with huge amounts of information CURRENTLY online. Free downloads, historical info, and all sorts of stuff is there for you. Long promised, finally here.
