Monitoring U.S. Homeland Security
This past Monday I was a guest on James Talmage Steven’s radio show, the FamilyPreparednessGuide Talk Show on Blog Talk Radio. James is the author of one of the great family preparedness books, Making the Best of Basics: Family Preparedness Handbook .
James graciously summarized the show thusly…
We discussed the Haitian quake and how we can learn from that overwhelming natural disaster. We discussed the differences in the relative nature of the San Francisco quake 20 years ago, and how there were only 65 people killed. We talked about FEMA 196 and how it details the potential disasters in virtually every county in the US. Rich made that 1990 study available at no charge on his website:
http:// www.survivalring.org/FEMA196-free.pdf (12.5 Megabytes - May take a few minutes to download – opens in new window)
Another great resource is www.Ready.gov. Rich suggested this course of action regarding disasters preparation:
- Be aware of probability of natural disasters to which you are vulnerable.
- Practice the 3 P’s: Prioritize Potential Problems
- Determine what is needed to deal with disaster.
- Get tools/equipment/supplies to resolve disaster.
- Learn how to utilize them before disaster.

I’ll be on again next Monday, Feb. 1st where we will be discussing planning, preparing, and using 72 hour Kits. Tune in then…
I’ve been made aware of a potential vulnerability regarding MalWare infections from SurvivalRing. I’ve just run two different website based tools, checked the site source code, and can not find any obvious infection on the site *at this time*.
The two infections mentioned by one user are “two trojans: Troj/PDFJs-GV and Malware.Gen” . I’ve had no other warnings from anyone else, but do take ANY site vulnerabilty/infection/hack VERY seriously.
I will do a complete and thorough FTP review of the site after work. Please, if you spot ANY warnings from your antivirus or antispyware regarding the SurvivalRing.org website, PLEASE forward any info you can to me at my email address of rafleet@gmail.com .
Thanks much,
Rich
Welcome to the new blog section of SurvivalRing. You may be familiar with blogs already, and maybe even a few prepping and survival blogs, such as James W. Rawles excellent SurvivalBlog.com . Basically, a blog is a website tool that allows for constant updates of info, news, stories, links, downloads, and the like. I’ve run blogs for years, but this particular part of SurvivalRing (the content part of the expansive SurvivalRing website) has needed this tool for quite a while. Well, here it is!
The SR Blog will be updated daily, sometimes several times a day. I hope to have multiple authors (besides myself) sharing in providing content to this section. While SurvivalRing has been added gigabytes of downloadable content every year (yes…GIGA bytes), we want to be able to point you, quickly, to that new content, WHEN it is added.
So, stay tuned. We’ll be doing some backend programming on this section over the next few days. Once it works like I want it to, you will starting seeing those daily postings and continued additions to the SurvivalRing website.

The next issue of the SurvivalRingEzine newsletter has just been posted, with timely info (read it TODAY), and quite a bit of interesting news and events.

Rich
SurvivalRing started in early 1997 as a single page focused on building up a network of like minded individual websites via the technology of Webrings. In 1999, SurvivalRing became a household name as Y2k chaos loomed on the horizon.
A major website update occurred in 2001, created while I was driving cross country as a hotshot truck driver. Major plans for SurvivalRing as a world class content website began then. Over the next few years, hundreds of megabytes, and then gigabytes, were uploaded and shared via many different sections of the 2001 design. Traffic to this site jumped to over 100,000 unique visitors a month, and hundreds of gigabytes (1000 megabytes per gigabyte) were downloaded each year. Also during this time, I returned to college and got degrees in web development and broadcasting, while earning many state and national academic recognitions.
This new site design is the culmination of years of study, new software, intense discussion, and many sleepless nights. Database driven info, multimedia delivery, unlimited expansion and upgrade capability, and a uniform presentation of all SurvivalRing content gives you faster and better access to all the ebooks, software, media and more. Use the navigation above to find ALL the sections of SurvivalRing, including many old, AND new, sections. As SurvivalRing 5.0 hits the streets, we’ll be looking for any access issues, speed problems, or other problems or issues.
Be sure to comment, or contact us, on our new look, style, and feel. It’s all here…just for you.
Rich
