Civil Defense Now - Potential US Targets!
By Richard Fleetwood -
Welcome! This page has been receiving THOUSANDS of hits a day the past few months, because of the growing fears in the news about upcoming, and almost certain, attacks on U.S. soil by terrorists connected with Osama Bin Laden, and Al Queda. I want to thank you for dropping in to see what we have. Rest assured that as I am able to provide updated information, I will present it here first.
Understand that the list below was created several years ago, and is provided here AS A STARTING POINT for folks looking to see if they live in a targeted area. The possibility of all out nuclear war has dropped to a mere fraction of what it was, but the events of 9/11 at the WTC, flight 93 in Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon resulted in the deaths of 3,016 innocent civilians, because of an act of war by Osama Bin Laden and other terrorists. This is only the first volley of future attacks on American soil.
Use this resource page to get a feel for what MAKES A TARGET, whether it's an individual terrorist, a group, or an entire nation aiming for us. Understand why they will likely select a LARGER target than just a small town, with no industrial base ( in my opinion, a very safe place to be in this day and age). Learn how to react if something big does happen where you live. Find out where you might evacuate to, or have a safe place or location in or near your home to keep your family safe. Know what kind of preparedness kit (food, water, clothes, portable radio, flashlight, etc.) to have made and/or available, JUST in case the next event DOES happen near you.
Dirty bombs have become the modern fear of the Emergency Management Community. These are conventional weapons, such as Amonium Nitrate (such as used at Oklahoma City by Timothy McVeigh), C4 (plastic explosives), or any number of high energy, NON-radioactive explosives. Adding radioactive waste (such as the sources used in old medical xray machines, or stolen waste from any of thousands of sources around the world), makes the conventional weapon "dirty", meaning it will produce radioactive emissions and fallout.
One scenario mentioned in the past year in print news referred to an event possibility using a 12" by 1" cobalt rod attached to a powerful plastic explosive. The effects of such a weapon in an area such as Lower Manhattan, as the article mentioned, would make the area uninhabitable for up to 70 years. This is a real threat, and can happen ANY place in this nation, at any time, without any warning.
My thoughts? Have a plan. Know how to identify a threat, know where to get IMMEDIATE information ( radio, TV, cable, shortwave, CB Radio, local officials, etc.). Have a Bugout kit (backpack or duffel bag with the preparedness items mentioned above). Above all, DO NOT PANIC. What could have resulted in a death toll ten times higher (30,000 people) at the WTC was avoided because people in the towers after the attack that could leave, did in an orderly, quick, and safe manner, helping others along the way.
Also, if you are clear headed, you can help those that might not be, and the victim count afterwards could be lower, thanks to you and more folks like you. If a dirty bomb does go off, know your surroundings. Are you upwind? Get a map of your region and keep it with you at all times. Know where a fallout shelter is? If not, learn what makes a good one, or ask your EMA professional in your city or county WHERE one is located in case such an event occurs.
Download ALL the fallout shetler related documents on this website and PRINT THEM OUT. It is the single best thing you could do to educate yourself in how to deal with nuclear fallout and radiation threats. Want to learn more? Join your local county CERT program, and contact your local city and county emergency management coordinator.
Recent news reports make claims that a RDD (Radiological Despersion Device) weapon would create minimal damage, comparable to a truck bomb of conventional explosives, and would be easily cleaned up. Most professional thought about such a device includes use in downtown or metro areas, where buildings and skyscrapers would buffer and lessan the destructive zone and minimize radiological spread. There WOULD be a mess, and a LOT of decontamination, but infrastucture and training by public safety officials now take this kind of incident as a possible event, and exact and planned response would minimize casualties and long term health threats.
Don't forget, the SurvivalRing website has MORE free downloadable FALLOUT SHELTER PLANS, information, and standards, than any other site in the world, with thousands of pages more to come. A dirty bomb, or even a single nuclear detonation event, is NOT the end of the world, but it is a world-class pain-in-the-ass. You can,and you will, live through it. You do not have to become ill, get cancer, luekemia, or any other radiological related disease because of it.
You have taken the first step in personal preparedness by visiting here. Visit the vast resources that SurvivalRing offers to you. Share REAL info on preparedness with me, if you have any. Documents, books, contacts, resources, or ideas can ALL go along way into helping the rest of our fellow citizens be safe in the worst of times. Visit as many pages on SurvivalRing as you can, and be sure to bookmark our main page at The SurvivalRing Homepage.
I've had a few comments on making things easier for folks to get started here on SurvivalRing. Being the LARGEST civil defense, survival and preparedness document resource on the web, with tens of thousands of pages of downloadable files, in hundreds of PDF and HTML documents. We host the OLDEST Survival webring with the SurvivalRing Webring. I *KNOW* there is too much to comprehend in your first few visits, so bookmark this website and come back often, save the pages to your harddrive, or print out those really interesting pages to take to work and read during your lunch break. Save time AND money, and purchase our CDs to have 25,000 pages of this same data in your hands.
I have just put online a new page on Getting Started, called SurvivalRing - What To Do & Where To Start which gives you some basic starting points for finding info on this, and other websites, Threat Level definitions, action lists for families, businesses, and schools, Terrorist Force Protection Condition info, The Department of Homeland Security Threat Matrix, Internet Threat Level, and Red Cross "Answers to Your Questions about Heightened Threat Level ". As an added bonus, visit the new 72 Hour Kit page, to get started in preparing your very own "Bug Out Bag". Comments? Email me below.
You can and will be ready for the worst things that can happen. And, YOU won't become a victim. Again, thanks for your interest, and please share this page with ALL of your friends, anyone you know. The more ready we all are, the less damage those brain-damaged, self-serving, egomaniacal terrorists can do to our bodies, minds, hearts, and souls. Sincerely
Richard Fleetwood - Founder of SurvivalRing
This list was provided to me a few years ago via email, and I am not sure of the original source. However, having MANY copies of a book produced by FEMA, called RISKS AND HAZARDS-STATE BY STATE- FEMA 196 - downloadable in its entirety above), a report produced in 1990 that shows both nuclear risk areas AND natural disaster zones for the entire nation, as well as the FEMA report TR-72 High Risk Areas of the United States, the data contained in both seems to match up with most of the data presented here. I also have available for download the entire report called Nuclear Attack Planning Base 1990, recently released by FEMA through a Freedom of Information request that took two years to finish. This report has much more detailed maps than FEMA 196, but it over 20 years old.
I offer this targets list to you as a simple resource to let YOU follow up on...to see if YOUR area would be a potential nuclear target. Also, see the target MAPS below the list, to give you a graphic idea of where possible danger areas could be. Finally, check out the COMMUNITY INFO AND MAPS link next to each state name, which will take you to a mirror of Bruce Beach's Nuclear Survival website, where he has scanned in the STATE nuclear target maps and presented safety data for EACH state....in other words, much more detail, down to county level. The community groups and contact info are somewhat dated, but I will be glad to edit, add, or delete information within as I receive updates.
With all that said, here is the LATEST edition of the target list...
U.S. Target List...in a Full Scale Nuclear War
Starting in the fifties, when the USSR got ahold of the plans for atomic weapons, and developed their own bombs, the fear of world domination and all out war with them developed into the Cold War. The Soviet strategy for nuclear war was much different than ours. For a first strike the general plan would be to send in submarine launched missiles. With a flight time of about 20 minutes to their farthest targets they could take out command and control, sub bases (where at any given time a large percentage of our missle boats are in port), SAC bases (and airports where bombers and tankers may have been dispersed ), and air bursts over our own missile fields.
The air bursts would keep our own missiles from being launched while their own "silo busters" would come chugging over the North Pole from their land based ICBM's and dig up our missile fields.
The location of our missile fields was of special interest to anyone preparing to deal with possibile radioactive fallout. Air bursts such as were used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki produce suprisingly little fallout compared with what would be produced by ground bursts on our missile fields and other "hard targets".
These targets and areas most likely to be hit in a nuclear exchange are divided into three catagories;
PRIMARY:
These are mostly missile silos, bomber bases, submarine bases, and command and control centers. The enemy must neutralize these assets immediately to prevent or minimize retaliation.
SECONDARY:
Major military, industrial, governmental, and transportation centers. Also included are sea ports, locks and dams. These may be hit at once by the first missiles or struck by the bombers that will follow.
TERTIARY:
These are population and industrial centers that probably wouldn't be hit in the first strikes but would be high on the lists for later destruction to further cripple our ability to fight a prolonged war and/or recover and function as a nation. Threats against these targets could also be used following the initial attacks to force our leader- ship to capitulate.
In the event of a dangerous rise in tensions, military forces would be widely dispersed to make them less vulnerable to a first strike. This would make some areas more likely to be hit. Heavy bombers and strato- tankers would be scattered to any civilian or military runway long enough for them to operate from. A B-52 needs about 7000 feet to take off fully loaded. An FB-111 needs about 5500 feet (the exact figures are classified). The B1 "Spirit" Stealth Bomber needs less runway, but more supporting infrastructure.
This would make any runway that length a potential primary target.
Also, the fact that our war planners, and the Strategic Air Command, planned on continuing war efforts with nuke bombers once the first mushroom clouds were rising, meant that any long stretch of interstate highway, county highways, or other straight and clear hard surfaces could be used for landing, refueling, and reloading more warheads on these aircraft after the first loads were dropped. Therefore, even OLD bases that have been shut down in recent years because of congressional decisions and decreased funding, would still be targets simply because they would be the first refuel/rearm points to be used. The point is that a knowledge of your particular area and it's potential usefulness in a war situation is critical to your individual planning.
NOTE: For detailed maps of EACH U.S. state, download the FEMA book FEMA 196 Risks and Hazards State By State (Digitized and presented to you by SurvivalRing.org) and learn all about the threats YOUR state faces, with detailed information.
Also, if you feel that there should be additions, subtractions, or changes to this list, use the CONTACT US form above to let us know. Please give STATE, Primary/Secondary/Tertiary, TYPE of target, and why you think it should be on here, or not. I will be creating an entirely NEW website/webpage system JUST for target research and information, so that all this info can be handled in a dynamic, and updatable way.
Finally, understand this page EXISTS for Americans to know what we "might" expect in areas that WE live in. The Government created the weapons of mass destruction, and did a "little" planning on how to inform the private sector, such as with FEMA 196, but has not, in many years, made a point to give the average citizen REAL information and REAL detail...only to state publically through mass media that "We WILL be attacked again, and again...Be Ready" ... per Bush, per Ashcroft, per Cheney, per Tom Ridge...every week lately.
This page exists, because ONE person, ME, saw a need to fill, that Uncle Sam would not, by bringing this info to the internet. None of this information is secret, confidential, or in any way private. It is based on published info, freely available on the web and in multitudes of published hard bound books. We do NOT do this to give the enemy, known now as "The Terrorists" (Al Queda, Extremists, the Jihadists, etc.) places to hit us...they already know what they're going to do. We do this to give YOU, the American Citizen, a heads-up on why something USED to be a target, and may be again. YOU must decide how you will prepare, and slightly adjust YOUR lifestyle to be ready to deal with those future events that Uncle Sam literally PROMISES will occur.

After having gone through this list, and viewing the above maps, remember one thing: Many U.S. target areas have been decommissioned or changed their original mission and may not be targeted now by foreign nations. Then, again....maybe they still ARE targeted. Just think about it when YOU are VERIFYING whether you are in a target area.
I do have in PDF format a few more targeting documents, but I won't be posting them on an open page like this one. One is the first part of HI RISK AREAS of the UNITED STATES, dated 1978...the precurser to the Nuclear Attack Planning Base 1990 report (NAPB90) that consumed over 600 pages of paper. The other document worthy of noting on THIS page, is the NAPB90 National Aimpoint List, a strange document found via interlibrary loan directly from FEMA's Emergency Management Library, showing longitude and latitudes for MOST of the continental United States nuclear targets, which the US assumed would be targeted by Soviet or Chinese military in an all out nuclear war. Here is a sample page....
I will ONLY share these two documents with CERTIFIED public safety and emergency management officials. Neither of these documents are classified or confidential in any way, and were both received via interlibrary loan to my college library. Got something interesting to share along these lines? Email me, or send a message from the SurvivalRing homepage using the CONTACT ME form.
Thanks for checking out this page, and "keep.....looking.....up....."

Please include a note with your donations/material loans, with return mailing address, email address, background on documents origination, and any associated details. I am looking for municipal (city level), county, state, and multinational (US, Canada, and any other nation) civil defense program documents of NON-confidential nature, specifically that which helps the general populace in preparation of ANY disaster, not just nuclear.

People forget, farmland which provides the populace with the ability to
feed itself is a valid target. Drifting fallout goes where it wants to,
and may be combined with a strong storm system for better distribution.
Any attack would shut down most businesses, including military related
ones.
EMP might not be a first course of action, as much as an economic meltdown
would cause greater disarray. How long will an army obey orders if it isn't
being paid, or is paid in worthless money?

Iodine,
Yep...SOME of them are. The color map is straight from FEMA 196-Risks and
Hazards State by State, published 1990...many years LATER than the old
civil defense program, and just after the OLD cold war ended. And, yes,
they do need to come up with new maps...and they are. Problem is, they are
classified. I've been contacted by more than one contractor working for
Uncle Sam on DHS projects, and shared some of my private collection with
them (such as the Aimpoint List), which was new to them.

These maps are straight out of old civil defense handbooks from the 1960's.
Things have changed quite a bit in 40 years. Now that the cold war is
starting to heat up again, they might have to come up with some new maps.

Please remove the Primary Target - Chanute Airforce Base in Rantoul, IL.
It has been closed for almost 20 years, and no military remains in Rantoul.
The base is now owned by the village of Rantoul and contains a large are

Even if some of the targets are outdated many of the "old" targets will be
hit just to be sure.
Some have asked why there city would be targeted, Well in those days any
city with a pop. of 50.000 or more was on the list. After the first strike
the cities would have received a secondary strike containing
Biologicals(Small Pox) to wipe out the suvivors after their immune systems
were comprimised.

I appreciate the information but I'm a little confused when it comes to
Secondary and Tertiary strikes. I live in Texarkana, Texas which is listed
as a secondary target but Texarkana, ARK has been listed as a tertiary
target. There really is no distinction between the locations of the two
cities. A street that runs down the middle of the two towns separates Texas
from Arkansas. ( On a side note the street is called State-Line it's funny
if you think about it.) Does this mean that we should expect two bombs or
just one and if so would the priority of Arkansas move up to secondary or
Texas move down to tertiary. I'm hoping you say the Texas side would move
down but that isn't very logical; it's only a naive wish. Thanks.

I live in Northern California (Lake County). I know Sacramento and the Bay

safe where I am? I also can't figure out what that target is on the coast
of Mendocino County to the west on your map. Thanks.

All these comments about primary, secondary, and tertiary targets are very
concerning.
Rule 1 for nuclear war: Get out of the Cities!
Rule 2: Assume your target is a primary target.
Rule 3: Just because it's been decommissioned doesn't mean it's still not a
target.
Primary rule: Prepare for the worst. Better to be over-prepared than
under.
FYI, there's a tertiary target in Pend Oreille County, WA that I think is a
dam but am not certain. If it is a hydroelectric dam, it probably is a
higher priority target as it responsible for a lot of power in the NW.

These days I dont think that you have to worry about Nukeular attacks. More
I would worry about ground attacks in the cities that offer a bigger kill
rate. I think we should worry more about attacks in big cities, I would say
all the big cities of the USA. I for one will never go back to the cities.
But if anyone is going to attack us just to kill us that is where the
attacks will be. meaning other then to start out an all out nukeular war
nobody wants that. I would have to say that it would be terrioust attacks
on the cities where they would get the most population kills.

Very informative, although I would think that Great Lakes, IL, the Navy
Recruit Training Command/Tech Core/Engineering Schools would be a key
target in IL due to Navy tech ratings being trained there, just a thought.
Also you have Meridian, MI listed as a tertiary target, even tho there is
also a Naval Air Base/Training School there. I think that it would be
logically moved to a primary, or secondary target.
You also need to think more of physiological warfare. Would we be more
effected by losing a Military Base, or a beloved national monument?
Personally I would think that the enemy would choose the latter (See World
Trade Center.)

I have owned my copy of nuclear war survival skills and several other
publications for many years. I have watched the world change over the
years and although I am not convinced of a full out nuclear war, I do
believe that the world will undergo some transformation that may alter the
balance of power and social economic lines in our lifetime. I have done
the math from the information provided, and although my location is not
ideal I believe that building a well stocked fallout (security bunker)
shelter will work. I live and work in the Kalamazoo MI area, The property
I am looking at is 24 miles west of the city and several miles south of the
I-94 Highway corridor. I realize there is a nuclear power plant west of
that location about 35 miles, but it is also south of me and prevailing
winds should help with that factor. As I said, it is not ideal, but this
is where my life is and I believe this location is survivable.. Any
thoughts?? Thanks.

The target list is obsolete. It lists the dissasembled Minuteman silos.
In SC, it lists the Navy base (now defunct) and the now non-functioning
weapons production facility near Aiken, SC
Larry Salley

Interesting subject, but somewhat outdated.
In looking at the primary target list, the Charleston, SC submarine base no
longer exists.
The Savannah River Plant site in Aiken, SC, no loger exists.
None of the Minuteman silos, which were once primary targets, when the
Clayton book was published in the early 1980s..exist in 2007.
Almost all of the strategic targets cited in this article no longer exist,
thank to the SALT initiatives under Ronald Regan.
GPS technology has moved our nuclear triad off-shore, to the extent that a
few Trident class SSBNs can carry the entire "Doomsday package" of the old
SAC. Other than striking "counter-value" targets, there is no longer a
utility in attacking targets in CONUS.
Nevertheless, there is a utility in maintaining awareness of the dangers
presented in catastrophic circumstances.
In reading this page, I am circumspectually aware that President Regan made
our world safer from the Soviet threat.

I was wondering if several layers of concreet backerboard (such as used
behind tile in bathrooms etc) would work to cut down on radiation? It comes
in 1/2"thick sheets. With 12 sheats would you get near the same protection
as a 6" thick concreet wall?
Of corse you would have to stagger the joints.
Im also wondering if you put copper scrubbing pads (chore boy etc) into an
air pipe would it help to cut down on radiation?

Vanturco,
If GLOBAL nuke war occurs, MOST of us ARE screwed...but not from fallout.
It'll more likely be from starvation by not having adequate food and water
supplies, the ability to grow your own food, supplies for any livestock,
and the proper tools to dust yourself off and get back on your feet. THAT
is the threat. Fallout can kill, but not if you seek appropriate short term
shelter. Read a little deeper into the science and preparedness info I have
online here. Best start would be Nuclear War Survival Skills, which you can
find here www.survivalring.org/bunker . Nuke terror is a hell of a lot more
likely to occur than all out nuclear war, but the individual response to
the threat is simple, and very easy to deal with, if your only true worry
is fallout. Living inside an area that is LIKELY to be in a blast
overpressure zone...well that is why I have these target lists here, but
they're only good for the US. If I had sources for every other country's
likely targets, I'd add them here as well.
By the way, On The Beach was FICTION...as are most other fictional nuke
survival movies, books, and plays. Know your threat by doing your own real
research, instead of listening to pop culture references.

Hello, Bernice...
Bruce Beach, being a long time Canuck, can probably answer this better. Try
this page...
http://www.ki4u.com/nuclearsurvival/states/aatargets.htm
Read the entire page, for a good idea of what North American targeting
would be, and apply the target strategy to the same type of
industry/military areas you might find north of the border.
My personal feelings are that Most targeting would be on Canada's east
coast. The west side of the country would receive fallout from foreign
attacks on Alaskan targets, such as oil ports and such.

Hi Mary,
Iowa is average for long term living, but in event of regional disaster,
it's still a bit too close to Chicago, Detroit, and most of the east coast.
Upwind of you to the west and northwest are the missile fields of Wyoming,
Nebraska, South Dakota, and Montana...which in a bad situation, would
certainly be hit. Unless you have access to PLENTY of water on your
potential property, off road capable vehicles for the dirt road, and good
soil at the new place for your private garden, you might reconsider. Good
move away from major areas, but an easy half tank of gas for threats to
reach you via surface traffic. Think hard about longer term needs. If you
can make it work on this farmhouse, you'll be ok. Key thing is be aware of
city, state and regional threat analysis and self preservation needs to
deal with them. Sound like a good place to make a very good fallout
shelter out of sight of prying eyes.

Hi Mike,
Looking at your area, you're located in what could be a very bad place.
You're directly downwind from Detroit, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh...all
major metro areas targeted for multiple reasons, and multiple warhead
strikes in a large attack...think megatons as an upwind possibility.
You're northeast of Baltimore and DC, and uncomfortably close. Looks like
you're located near the Funktown/I-70 area. Hagerstown seems to have a nice
buffer of lots of greenbelt/farming area, which is nice. But your biggest
threat, post nuke anywhere in your region, is that you're very near a main
thoroughfare, have food processing and storage, and will have a lot of
nuclear fallout in a multi-pronged attack on the east coast.
Best bet. Have a plan to head FAR west...other side of the Mississippi, or
deep mountains of Virginia, and have a bugout bag, vehicle, and friends in
those areas.

We have found an old farmhouse with 7 acres, out in the country on a dirt

Bryan,
You seem to be just south of M8, with a buffer of some farmland between you
and the city. Edinburgh's population of just under half a million is the
same as my entire state of Wyoming, but with the entire country still one
third the size of my state, it has be be a lot more crowded. Edinburgh,
being the nation's capital has too many things going for it to NOT be a
major target in a regional attack. The industrial base, coastal ports,
major airport (already a previous target of terror this year), probably
military staging, fuel and transportation hub, and assumedly communications
and food production facilities. You're way too close my friend. Options?
Get more rural...expatriate to the USA...or hunker down in your own
unannounced and hand made safe room/shelter in your own home. Good luck.

PJ,
The areas you've looked at are a good start. Also, consider Wyoming and/or
southern Montana. Wyoming is shielded quite a bit by the Rockies,
especially in the Wind River Basin. During the nuke testing years, fallout
paths from Nevada were diverted north and south of the Basin by three
different ranges. Also, Montana is a good bet, since any terror hits on the
east coast, for the most part, will be carried southeast be seasonal
prevailing winds...which means away from Montana.
Consider smaller towns of less then 10k population. Become active in the
community, and bring skills that are helpful to the table.
Hope this helps.

I am trying to assess where to buy a bug-out location, since I am forced to
live near a target city. There are many considerations, of course. I am
primarily looking for any location not a direct target of a nuke, be it
from enemy nation or Islamofascist terrorist and a location out of the area
of initial nuclear fallout (the first 1-2 weeks after an attack), given
normal prevailing winds. A good secondary concern would be the mass
relocation of survivors from metro areas (if any), and their most-likely
routes (probably the Interstate Highways). I should like to stay away from
those as well. Currently looking at SW Oregon, Eastern Oregon and
Mid-Western Idaho. Any suggestions?

I would move these two bases in Sacramento down or off of the list since
they have both been closed now for years: Mather AFB (SAC bombers,

somewhere else and Mather is now a civilian airport and McClellan is now a
business park.

Hi Brian,
You answered your own question. As long as there exists a usuable runway,
it can and would be used as a secondary landing area, for refueling,
rearming, and relaunching if and as needed. Same reason the interstates
are designed in certain ways. Can be used for the exact same reason, after
all primary landing strips have been hit. SAC may not be around there for
the time being, but if needed, that airport will be reconstituted within
hours of need.

I'm confused why Sault Ste Marie, Michigan would be a primary target when

not SAC base exists in the area anymore..

Shouldn't Ft. Campbell Army base in Clarksville, TN be somewhere on the
list? I know army bases are not top priority, but it does have a really
long runway that could be used for refueling and rearming as said in other
places.
I'm also wondering why Memphis gets a higher rating than Nashville? Memphis
in on a plain (I-40 as a runway) and the Mississippi (for moving large
amounts of mem and material). Is there anything else that makes a
difference?
Justin
16 May 2007, 19:31
Shaun, what the hell are you talking about? North Korea never launched any
missles in October 2006. The last missle test done by North Korea was July
5, 2006, and the Taepodong-2 missle they were testing failed and crashed
into the Sea of Japan less than a minute in flight. The US made no attempts
to shoot down the missles as they were not threatning or aimed for a
specific target.
If you are referring to the Octobet, 2006 North Korean nuclear test, that
test was conducted underground.
The Strategic Defense Initiative (or "Star Wars" as you call it) was never
fully developed or deployed. It would potentially violate several previous
treaties, and would render the MAD doctrine completely moot.
Stop pulling garbage out of your ass.

Can we trust the Russians.Do they look at us as weaker since we have
stretched are forces and there is still movements to reduce our nuclear
forces.Through the years we have ceased steps that we use to view as
critical to our defense-Operation Chrome Dome, the Lookingglass flights,
Tacamo flights. Do our bomber forces still practice to get off the ground
in minutes if an alert is sounded, and how many of our SSBN's are at sea
ready to launch. How stable is our Nuclear Triad. I know the Russians say
that they no longer target our cities but doesn't it only take a fwe
minutes to retarget their missiles.Besides most of our military targets are
near large population centers anyway. Other than England who are our true
friends that will respond if we are attacked. At times I feel we are at more
risk than we were during the Cold War, at least there was a clearer picture
of our true enemy. Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

Hi Joe,
This worry has been going on for years, since the 90s. Google American
Hiroshima, and you'll get this "Paul Williams details 'American Hiroshima'
Al-Qaida plotting nuclear attack with weapons already in U.S."
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=46127
Williams has been pushing this book for a LONG time now, and is not the
only voice claiming AQ has nukes. My feeling is this...IF they had
them...even one...they would have used one by now. Yet, all we've seen is
suicide bombers, several failed hijack attempts, and menace and daily
threat in the middle east.
I do fear that if they really don't have one, they soon will...and we will
see tens of thousands die in a US city when they use it.
Prepare for the worst...hope for the best.

Hi Cathy,
Below are some answers for you.
1. I live in the Metro Atlanta area (Georgia). I note Atlanta is on the
list. Is that for just one bomb? Would Fort Gillem, Fort MacPherson, and
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport be targeted?
Here is a map of potential Georgia targets.
http://www.survivalring.org/nuclearsurvival/states/ga.jpg
I believe the places you mention above would be targets in a massive
attack, but we're more likely to see terrorist in a major metro area, and
unfortunately, Atlanta is one of those in a big way. Best option to stay
safe in the long run would be to find a place northwest of the metro area
to live and work (if possible), so if/when Atlanta gets another bomb (I
remember Rudolph and the Olympics), you'll be UPWIND.
2. Would the Hatch nuclear power plant in Appling County (SE Georgia)
possibly be a target?
Yes, ANY nuke power plant is a target. Although the government is taking
protection of them deadly seriously, the potential for aircraft or truck
bomb attack would crack the cask and release a radioactive plume downwind.
Again, find an upwind location from any target. Hope this helps.

Hi Uhu,
Thanks for you input. I would love to see your solution occur on this
planet. However, the US is not the only nation with stockpiles of nuclear
weapons. Until ALL get rid of their weapons, NONE will be safe. Currently
there are over 26,000 warheads, either assembled or as nuclear "pits"
(plutonium cores of nukes) on the face of the planet. Some of those are
MISSING. I can only guess where they might be. Yep, we've all heard the
rumors, but NO absolute verification of backpack nukes, tracking of EVERY
warhead, or if Al-Queda REALLY has their hands on some.
It's a long wanted dream of No Nukes on the planet...but it's not going to
happen anytime soon. Again, it is up to INDIVIDUALS to know how to deal
with a future nuclear disaster upwind of them...when, not if, it is to
occur. That is what the REST of this website is all about.
Uhu, tell us. How does Russia feel, I mean, at the citizen level? Is the
average man on the street concerned about nuclear terror, or still
concerned with possible attack from the Evil Western Capitalists? There
has to be some valid response from your side of the pond on how normal
folks feel about it as well. Please share your comments here when you can.

Joe,
Peace through Strength is what Reagan used to end the Cold War with the
Soviets. During the run up to the end of the USSR, I played a part of the
program, working in Defense Electronics building FLIR, Laser, TOW, and
other weapons control systems. I could show you the Google Map of the huge
boarded up plant that I worked at for years, now shut down, like hundreds
of others across the country.
Our military is the strongest, most agile, and best equipped in the world.
BUT, they're being rationed with bullets, protective gear, and more...and
our previous and even current administrations (mostly the now Democratic
congress) STILL want to cut funding, and make it HARDER for our soldiers to
do their job...which means one thing. If they can't do their job properly,
our nation is in for one hell of a future, with terror back on our shores
in a short time, and here to stay.
This targets page is what the OLD SCHOOL team thought would be threatened
by our enemies in the worst kinds of attack...all out global thermonuclear
warfare. Now, just pick ANY target city above. We could lose ANY one of
them today, tomorrow, or in a few minutes...because someone high up in
government decided we just can't do enough to PROTECT anyplace
anymore...only RESPOND to the "eventual" destruction of a major city. Can
you say "Katrina Response"?
I have verification from the highest sources, that THIS is the current
SOP.
What does this mean to you and me, the average citizen? It is up to US to
know how to protect ourselves, should we be downwind from that now
inevitible terror attack.
The list above gives us at least some kind of starting point. Remember
this, however. The attacks on 9/11 occurred in cities MENTIONED ABOVE.
Think about THAT. This list was online before THAT event occurred.

long time.If we do not maintain a deterrent force we invite attack. We have

until the world grows up we need to stay strong.I wonder what all the
critics will say the day of the first nuclear strike on american soil.Until

I was in the Navy once. I survived Gulf War One and I am still alive
despite Gulf War Syndrome. I don't care what anyone thinks, I know "star
wars" exists and works quite well. What do you suppose destroyed the
missile North Korea attempted to launch in October of 2006? Is it possible
there are some nuclear suitcase bombs around here? Well, anything is
possible. But, I think the government knows how to find this kind of weapon
which is likely beyond top secret. Also, I think our interrogation methods
have yielded tremendous intelligence breathroughs saving lives. Medical
science has as well. In fact, I look forward to the revelations of the
great successes left quiet for now in 10 years or so, once this war has
finally concluded itself. Does China, North Korea and Iran need to go?
Absolutely. Russia too? Yes, if they sold them their weapons, and any other
nation, including Britain and France if proven, and even South Africa. hey,
I am a patriot and I believe in first strike if you know your enemy is
about to attempt to kill millions of your nation's people. Period. God And

R,
Your comments show a lack of real understanding about the entire thought
process of nuclear survival.
Your comments..."We are all screwed"
No...we're not. Fallout from any weapon decomposes fairly quickly. A
generalized nuclear attack would cause tremendous fallout, but many miles
downwind from an event, it would be safe to go outside after 14 days.
"Telling people they might be safe away from targets is foolish."
No...it's not foolish. It's called Planning. Any large city (duh..see the
list above) could be a target. Any small city MIGHT suffer fallout. But,
Fallout IS survivable. You just have to take the time to understand what it
is.
"The radiation, nuclear winter, and mass panic will kill many more."
No nuclear winter...period. Fallout..yes, it will kill, if people DON'T
take the time to educate themselves about how it works, and wait those 2
weeks. Panic? Yep..it'll happen. It happens for a lot LESS. LA..1992, for
example.
"Mankind will almost be snuffed out."
Nope...won't happen. What will kill a hell of a lot more is folks like you
giving up, and going into panic mode, and killing innocents as YOU start to
freak out.
"I am glad I am in an area where I would die in the fireball."
The MOST common response to a threat..."I want the easy way out..It's Too
Hard...Wah!" Get REAL, man! Life's a bitch, and you die. If you're
giving up, you're not living...you're ALREADY dead and just don't know
it...and your statement is the MOST selfish thing you can say. It is NOT
