I'm watching this situation in Nevada for several reasons...all DIRECTLY related to Federal overreach in so many ways. Warning...this is QUITE long...but you need to read it.
But, I have to say first, that as an employee of the state of Wyoming, my job requires me to work directly with the BLM Wild Horse and Burro program, and in my five plus years in this job, I've never seen the BLM, with my own eyes, do anything even REMOTELY similar to what is happening in Clark County, Nevada.
What other things AM I dealing with that brings this day's situation and confrontations to the forefront of my mind? I'll list a few for you...maybe you'll understand WHY I'm referencing the Nevada issue tonight.
Read closely. Pay attention to my words, and watch over the next few days what happens in Clark County.
Mr. Cliven Bundy has already stated that he'll stand his ground against the federal government, much like Randy Weaver did...back in 1992 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruby_Ridge). Bundy believes strongly in the 10th amendment, and State's Rights.
Strangely, Bundy took his stand against paying the BLM for grazing rights the FOLLOWING year, in 1993, and refused to be extorted further by the state and federal agencies since that time, causing the BLM to begin this week to confiscate the cattle of the Bundy clan out on the public range....but why now? Only God knows what reason.
Remember this...I'm watching as an observer now, a private citizen...and I recall all too well the events of Waco, Ruby Ridge, OKC...and how they changed Americans...and government...and the evil that arose back in those days BECAUSE of it. I moved from Texas to Alabama in a job transfer within the USPS, only weeks before Waco was torched. Being a born and bred Texan, I could not believe what the feds did...or why. It was simply the biggest murder rampage EVER in the history of Texas, by Americans from our own government, against a group people who would have eventually come out when they ran out of food.
Un-fucking-believable. Let's continue with my real connection to the current events in Nevada...Here goes.
1) Bundy made a reference this week to Randy Weaver, a victim of Federal government murder. In October 1999, I met Randy Weaver, while I was attending the 1999 Birmingham pre-Y2k Gun Show. I'd gone with a friend, someone I had validated as a Vietnam Vet, SF, Medic. Between helping him set up, and watching his table, I did some window shopping, and came across Weaver at his table, on the south side of the convention center area of the show.
He was selling copies of his book, of HIS side of the story...something I really hadn't seen covered in the years after his special place in history. He was about 4 or 5 inches shorter than me, graying, grizzled hair, and a quiet and modest man. Certainly not an anti-government domestic terrorist, classified as a separatist, right there...in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama....well known in history for its racial division, KKK, bombings, and so much horrible violence in the 20th century.
If Weaver was a separatist, he wouldn't have stepped a toe in Alabama, much less Birmingham. He was neither a Mark Kournke nor a William Cooper...both loudmouth, conspiracy-laden media hacks who invented stories that made them the darlings of what become the rebirth of American Militias...a bad thing.
Over the day, I chatted with Randy a couple of times. Seriously, if you were a fan of American History, you'd want to take a moment to chat just a little bit, with someone who had been on the wrong-ass end of a Federal Criminal Investigation, AND who had been shot by them, and seen his wife and son killed by almighty federal snipers, right in front of his eyes.
Nothing deep, nothing personal. Just a quiet conversation about time, family, and moving on. That was the only conversation I ever had with him, and I purchased a copy of his book to read later, which he signed for me. A memory of a man haunted by demons YOU AND I will never stand up to. A notch in the gun belt of my life. More on that later.
2) A year later, almost to the day, I moved with my family to Wyoming, resigning a job I loved, as a federal employee...a city letter carrier for the US Postal Service, which I held as a career for almost 10 years. In the late 90's. a friend I'd known since junior high school had convinced me over several months that a trucking venture he had started in Wyoming, held promise for big money, and traveling the USA.
I bit...quit...and we moved. The job was the worst decision I ever made in my life, and it cost me everything I made on the road doing the job, PLUS my postal retirement of tens of thousands of dollars. I hadn't done my due diligence...and we wound up homeless in Wyoming...and started over. But that's not the pertinent part of my backstory. The move, and business failure, eventually led me back to college in Central Wyoming, and I earned three college degrees in under 5 years, in web development, broadcasting, and education. BEST thing that ever happened to me. Now, for the interesting part.
Remember that 2nd degree above, the broadcasting one? Yep...that was with Wyoming Public Television, based at Central Wyoming College. Over the 4+ years at CWC, I did dozens and dozens of live shows, satellite truck video shoots, ran master control, and handled titles and audio on countless shows and events, and was involved in history in the making events (Vice president Cheney entering the public again, after accidentally shooting his friend in Texas while quail hunting...I was the main camera operator shooting head on video during his speech in the opening day of that year's legislature). Dozens of satellite trucks from all over the country taking feeds from our Sat. truck, and I'm keeping steady hands and solid framing of his speech, and it's going out to the entire western world. Wow. Breathtaking...and stunningly huge parts of my life.
During that period of time, on the opening convocation of CWC that year of Cheney's speech, a certain Mr. Gerry Spence, of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was the main speaker. Mr. Spence was the man who defended Randy Weaver in the federal trial of Weaver, regarding the fiasco of the FBI/ATF operations that cost him his wife, his son, and years of his life.
As a project for my broadcasting degree, I personally videoed Spence's speech that day, and edited it into a full blown hour plus DVD, shooting two cameras at once. He learned about the video a few days later, and requested a copy from me...and I was glad to do it, handling it personally for him.
As I learned during his convocation speech, Mr. Spence had started his law career right here in Riverton, Wyoming decades before, and in his years in town, had made many friends, and many enemies (guess that's par for the course in his line of work), and had made his mark in the judicial world by getting Weaver acquitted of the charges the Feds lobbed at him.
With that video project, and in those few personal contacts with Spence, I did ask him one simple off the subject question, regarding Weaver, mentioning I'd met him years before in Alabama. I asked Spence, "Was he screwed by the feds, made out as an example to scare any one else brave enough to take a stand and just want to be left alone?"
A short pause. A muffled cough of clearing his throat. "Yes...I believe he was".
How the hell was I to know, in my simple, yet sometimes mixed up life, that I'd be meeting both ends of such a tragic, yet massive federally created and managed disaster of such immense proportions that it changed the face of "evil US government" to "Murderous US government"? Under Clinton, our rule of law became one of the most thug-laden cluster-fucks the world had ever seen within our own shores.
Fate? Karma? Shits and giggles from someone on high? I'll never know...but I do know this. The last 20 years of my life has been about learning more about American History, in every way, shape, and form. That ever increasing and deep study has changed my political foundation, from simple conservative, to staunch Constitutionalist. I believe in giving people a hand up, not a hand out. Slaves are made in that way...as we have seen in 2008 and 2012.
The Rights of Man. Pure and simple. The Rule of Law. What we see today is that, which is so abundantly clear and sadly, has been increasingly overt and in your face with such violence and spittle-laden screams from mindless liberal drones...that it can not be mistaken for anything...but what it is.
Those that have the money....rule the law. A direct reference to what is happening to our poor Mr. Bundy in Clark County.
Quick review....#1 - Met Randy Weaver. #2 - Met Gerry Spence 7 years later. Connected the dots from the two people who PROVED it was government malfeasance of the highest order that led to the deaths of his family members, and nearly killed him...direct from the US Department of Justice.
These two items are a forewarning of what Mr. Bundy is up against...and the BLM? WHY? Why are they forming such a formidable force against a cattle rancher who for all intents and purposes, INCREASED the use of unused land, but as a rancher cared for and helped the land be useful and abundant as a reusable source for his herds for decades. This, causing increasingly personal threats from snipers, mulitple uses of tasers on family memers, attack dogs let loose at pregnant women and others, and cancer survivors thrown to the ground by thuggish LEO personnel?
Dear God...where is the common sense in all this? Oh wait, there IS none. It's strictly a show of force against ONE man, over TAXES...with threat of DEATH (with snipers and machine guns, what else would they plan on doing, if things went to the ultimate level of response?).
Why? To remind all of us...you and me...that this is no longer our nation.
It's the MONEY that rules who lives, dies, or grows mushrooms in their butt cracks. The power, ultimate life and death rulings and decisions of who keeps or loses freedom (and liberty), belongs to those who write the laws, pass the laws, take ever growing portions of our personal income, and threaten and berate us and COST us even more income by passing more laws to steal even more money with every waking hour.
One number. $18 trillion.
While they've stolent just over one third of Bundy's beef herd, they're broadcasting on mainstream media that they don't have the funds to continue feeding a certain strain of desert tortoise, and they're going to have to EUTHANIZE them? (read it your self -http://rt.com/usa/desert-tortoises-euthanize-nevada-024/)
Steal someone's herd, and then KILL TURTLES YOU'RE SWORN TO PROTECT AND DEFEND AND MANAGE? Who's running these things....fucking morons?
Regarding Bundy? The taking of rights and practice, held for generations, and extortion enforced by the guys with guns to CONTINUE paying up, or suffer the consequences. Where. Is. The. Justice?
Now...here's part 3. MY personal experience with another Federal Agency over-reaching its bounds...right here in my home town of Riverton, Wyoming.
I've got several dogs in this particular fight...allow me tell you about them.
We've lived here for 13 years, in this small rural western town, on the eastern foot of the Rockie Mountains. I've been all over this state, nearly exclusively with Wyoming PBS filming events, producing live shows or recording for editing, and fucntioned as production personnel in all areas of state government. I met previous governor Dave Fredenthal several times, state and federal legislators, and celebrities, both with PBS, and as a student representative from our college down in the state capital. Haven't met Matt Mead yet, our current GOP governor, though I expect to in the coming months, for reasons I'm not at liberty to say, because of my job in the state.
Here's the turning of the worm for part 3...
You may have heard the huge rumble regarding the Wind River Indian Reservation, and the EPA CHANGING reservation boundaries, to overlook treaties and state legislature decisions delineated in a 1905 congressional change to the original reservation boundaries, AGREED TO by the feds, the state, AND the leaders of the tribes at that time, that split out a the eastern center part of the reservation for homesteaders to get land grants and form cities, specifically Riverton, (map of the issue here http://goo.gl/X4ZyEJ ) Pavilion, Kinnear, and a few other tiny places that really don't qualify as "towns".
The tribes say these towns, and OLD reservation boundaries, are STILL Indian Country, and therefore they should have rights of jurisdiction, 109 years AFTER they ceded the land as stated by the 1905 law. That means where I live now, according to them, is reservation land. That means if I was to buy any land around here, if this EPA unjust ruling stands, the tribes could throw eminent domain around, and just take it from anyone they pleased. Oh, and that job I have with the state, is on the northern edge of Riverton...1000 acres of STATE property. Yep, that would go to.
Our governor is putting up a fight, using the state's attorney general. Our federal legislators in Washington DC, Senator's Enzi and Barraso, and Representative Lummis are writing bills as we speak to fight this federal overreach of land, by the EPA, by ultimate mandate... without any review by the Judicial or Legislative branches of the triad of Federal Government.
Landowners, business owners, local municipalities, and literally everyone with ANY understanding of the American Constitution are paying microscopically close attention to this agency's intentional overreach of the EPA limitations, by setting precedents of LEGAL changes they have NO POWER to make. In other words, a VERY personal example, right in front of my own eyes, of federal governmetn Executive Branch malaise and corruption...ruling by fiat and direction of the worst presidential administration this nation has EVER seen, in all of our glorious American History.
It absolutely makes me so bloody nauseous to see tyranny and theft by law, right in front me...daily...in a town I call my home, in a job that means so much to me, in a state that is one of THE most conservative in the nation.
Wyoming is the EQUALITY state. Individual rights. Justice for all. Not the "screw me out of my business, take my home of 50 years, steal my family ranch of 100 years, nor limit my future forever" changes...because a handful of people in those two tribes (both full of corruption and embezzlement themselves, thanks to the 3 casinos that now exist on the edges of the Rez). Just this week, one of the tribe's general councils fired several business council members, without publicized call or reason, leaving the council unable to operate, since without those people, they don't have enough people to form a quorum. Gee...hindsight is 20/20. Stupidity abounds.
So...Bundy is ready to pay the ultimate penalty of potential death, for his beliefs that he has the rights to graze on public land, without paying for it...because he sees the fees for what they are... extortion...which has driven all the other ranchers from Clark county.
Let me repeat that for emphasis...ALL the other ranchers of Clark County are gone. Bundy is the LAST man standing. He's not standing alone. Thousands of Americans are coming to stand with him.
A cliche coming up, but very poignant and directly related to Bundy and clan.
"Those who fail to remember history, are doomed to repeat it."
Bundy feels he has a God given right to do what he's been doing for 20 years. The feds are ready to kill him for his beliefs...and they have directly related experience in exactly that kind of thing, murdering innocent men, women and children either by gunfire, snipers, or intentionally set blazes.
The feds, again, stealing a man's livelihood, destroying his life, and threatening and abusing the people he loves and cares for...because they can...because previous politicians and political hacks have changed, rewritten, or added new laws that give them the legal act to do...what they are now doing.
Is Bundy right? Is he doing the right thing? Is he doing it to say to the feds, and at the same time, all Americans...that SOMEONE has to make that stand?
I believe HE believes he has the rights. I believe HE feels he's been wronged, screwed over, and left without any other alternatives.
And...yes...I believe that the BLM, their task force, their snipers, gunners, and thugs, and all their federal backup...are ready to kill again.
This is one for the courts to decide. But, in this administration and political environment, how could Bundy, or really, even any of us, trust the courts to do the right thing? AG Holder is not known as anything but a righteous, preening, racist, lying meat puppet, who does nothing to help the "Common Man", which is THE reason for position existing in the first place.
Where does this all end, for Bundy, and real Americans? In the courtroom by a jury of his peers, or in the gutter, an American (or several) lying dead on the pavement with their life's blood slowly oozing away into history.
Watch and learn. Remember what eventually happens with this standoff.
But for the grace of God, could go you and I.
I agree that every government agency should plans for emergency preparedness, but I don't agree that Medicare and Medicaid need to be involved. They provide medical coverage to the poor and under insured...All this law does is mandate what PROVIDERS must do...in other words, it's a another layer of MORE bureaucracy, at more TAX cost to each and every taxpayer. But, here...you need to read it for yourself..it's all here.
This proposed rule would establish national emergency preparedness requirements for Medicare- and Medicaid-participating providers and suppliers to ensure that they adequately plan for both natural and man-made disasters, and coordinate with federal, state, tribal, regional, and local emergency preparedness systems. It would also ensure that these providers and suppliers are adequately prepared to meet the needs of patients, residents, clients, and participants during disasters and emergency situations.
We are proposing emergency preparedness requirements that 17 provider and supplier types must meet to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Since existing Medicare and Medicaid requirements vary across the types of providers and suppliers, we are also proposing variations in these requirements. These variations are based on existing statutory and regulatory policies and differing needs of each provider or supplier type and the individuals to whom they provide health care services. Despite these variations, our proposed regulations would provide generally consistent emergency preparedness requirements, enhance patient safety during emergencies for persons served by Medicare- and Medicaid-participating facilities, and establish a more coordinated and defined response to natural and man-made disasters.
As a youth, I was actively involved in the Boy Scouts, which is where I learned the importance of being prepared. It’s the Boy Scout motto. That mindset transitioned with me into my career as a law enforcement officer.
As a police officer, I teach people the importance of being prepared and staying safe. Not necessarily for the end of the world, but how to protect themselves from crime, or how to be prepared and what to expect should they find themselves a victim of crime.
Chances are that at some time in your life you, a family member, or a friend has been a victim of a crime. It is a very unfortunate part of not just our society, but of humanity. Because of that, I want to convey some general tips and steps you can do to protect yourself.
The most important tip is to always be aware of your surroundings. Stop texting for a moment and take in what is going on around you. Criminals prey on those who look lost, distracted, and/or weak. So pay attention to your environment. Appear confident. Act like you are in control and are moving with a purpose. Don’t look like an easy target!
There are tens of thousands of muggings and assaults every year in the US. Here are a few more tips to help you avoid becoming a victim:
1. When exiting a building heading to your car, have the key you need to unlock your door already in your hand. Don’t be distracted at your car by fumbling around in your purse or pocket for your car keys.
2. Criminals look for victims that appear to have money or valuables. Avoid wearing flashy, expensive items. Or at least be discrete with them. Carrying large sums of money is not a great idea for obvious reasons.
3. Avoid using ATMs when alone and/or at night. If you need to use one, try to find one in a busy area like a grocery store. Thieves HATE witnesses!
4. Stick to well-populated areas. If you are visiting or are new to the area, try to learn about the area before venturing out into the unknown.
A majority of crimes committed today are crimes based on opportunity. What that means is that the Ocean’s Eleven highly planned and thought-out crimes are not common. Instead, most criminals don’t put much planning into their crimes, if any at all.
Criminals didn’t scheme when they stole your car. You left it parked in the street, running to warm up while you go back in the house to finish getting ready for work. They didn’t see anyone else around, so they decided “it’s time to go on a joyride.” You presented them an opportunity and they took it.
A car is stolen in the US about every 30 seconds. That is almost 1.2 million stolen cars a year! But here are some tips you can do to reduce the likelihood that your car is one of them:
5. ALWAYS lock your car. Over half of all stolen cars were unlocked at the time they were taken. Lock your car even when driving. (There are almost 50,000 car jackings every year in the US.
6. Never leave your keys in the car, and never leave a spare key in/on the car. Almost one in five stolen cars had a spare key in the car.
7. Don’t leave anything of value in the open in your car. Hide them, place them in the trunk, or cover them with something like a blanket.
8. Don’t rely on only a car alarm. They are so common now that most are ignored. And thieves can break a window and steal your contents in less than 20 seconds. Not much an alarm can do about that.
When parking in a large parking lot (like at the mall, supermarket, etc.), I always try to park beside a tall street lamp. This is smart for a couple of reasons. First, when you leave the building and walk to your car, it is easier to remember where you parked, and those tall lamps are easy to see. Second, if you are delayed for some reason and are now leaving and heading to your car when it is dark, your car will be illuminated. You will also be able to see better if someone is hanging around your car. And finally, the light at night helps to detract thieves from messing with your car. Like I said, they hate witnesses.
These are not 100 percent guarantees that you won’t be a victim. But as the old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
What tips would you add to the list?

Before I delve more into the nuts and bolts of armed carry for the novice handgunner, there is a subject that needs serious thought before we go any further. This is the psychological effects of a shooting, the physical response of the "Fight or Flight" reflex, and the personal and emotional toll that being in a life or death situation can bring, and the possible legal ramifications of a shooting and what it may bring.
Let's start by discussing the states of awareness that a person operates under.
Condition White: This is the most relaxed condition. You are safe in your home or at a friends or relatives. There is very little that could threaten you or your loved ones. You have no expectation of any violence.
Condition Yellow: You are outside of your "safe area", in a public area, but there is no real expectation of a threat. You observe those around you with attention, scanning for anything that seems out of place.
Condition Orange: You are outside of your comfort area, no real signs of a threat, but you have increased awareness of the people and things around you. Something may have seemed unusual, so you are in a state of heightened awareness. Sometimes this may be just that funny feeling, something telling you that something isn't as it should be.
Condition Red: You perceive a threat or threats to yourself and or the people you are with. You mentally prepare for immediate response to either retreat, secure yourself and others, or to take action to eliminate the threat.
Condition Red Action Required: This is when you have to make your decision, to flee if possible, to stand your ground, or to take immediate action to remove the threat. Let's think about consequences of carrying a firearm. You literally have the power of life or death under your control. This is something not to be taken lightly. By carrying a firearm, you are accepting that you may need to take someones life to safeguard your own or others lives. Anyone who doesn't think long and hard upon accepting that responsibility probably shouldn't be carrying a gun. You should always be aware of your circumstance and surroundings. Purposely going into high risk areas for no good reason while armed can hurt you if you have to go on trial later.
OK, let's take a look to what happens in the body when the "Fight Or Flight" reflex occurs. As you recognize the threat, your mind tells your body that you are in danger. There is a "chemical cocktail" released into your system that is adrenaline and other potent chemicals that immediately ready you for action. Your body will want to urinate and defecate, to remove or lessen the chance of infection if a bowel or bladder is punctured. This is where the expression "Scared the crap or the pee outta me" came from. You start to perspire freely, to lubricate the skin to allow free movement and to make you slippery and hard to grasp. The increase of adrenaline speeds up your heart rate and also constricts the blood vessels in your extremities, pooling the blood in your core organs as your blood pressure drops in the first stage of shock.
The surge of the cocktail increases your speed of processing information, and causes tachypsychia. Tachypsychia is a neurological condition that alters the perception of time, usually induced by physical exertion, drug use, or a traumatic event. It is sometimes referred to by martial arts instructors and self-defense experts as the Tachy Psyche effect. For someone affected by tachypsychia, time perceived by the individual either lengthens, making events appear to slow down, or contracts, objects appearing as moving in a speeding blur. It is believed that tachypsychia is induced by a combination of high levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, usually during periods of great physical stress and/or in violent confrontation.
You may also experience Auditory Exclusion, where you do not hear the sound of a gun firing, or gunfire may be heard as muffled pops. You may not be able to hear voices at all, even if someone is shouting in your ears. There have been cases where police officers in gunfights think that their gun has malfunctioned and isn't firing, causing them to fire shots in the air to see if the pistol fires, or do clearing drills, ejecting unfired rounds thinking they are duds.
With the blood pooling in your core, and blood vessels constricting in the extremities, you often lose your small motor skills, where your hands shake and lose the ability to manipulate small objects. That is why in training, you want to learn to operate your firearm by using your gross motor skills (large movements), rather than delicate individual movements of single digits. Muscle memory becomes your best friend at that point. You will perform exactly as you train. In the Newhall massacre in the early seventies, California Highway Patrol officers that were killed had emptied the fired brass into their hands then put it in their pockets as they had done on the range. This may have contributed to their demise, slowing their reloading time.
Knowing that these things will happen to you and being prepared for it will help measurably in life or death situations. So many civilians and also a large number of the law enforcement officers that I have trained have told me how shocking it was the first time these things happened in stressful situations. Knowing about it before you are involved in a scenario can make the difference between life and death.
Here's some things to remember if you are ever involved in a shooting. The police are NOT your friends! Do not talk to the police at the scene of the shooting, or the immediate aftermath. You'll still be hyped by the chemical cocktail, and utterances and anything you say, even before you are formally questioned, can be used against you. Use your right not to speak, until you have an attorney present. There are people behind bars today because of statements they made before they had representation. Plan on being in police custody at least 8 to 12 hours, maybe more.
The investigator will try to pick your story apart, so be aware of this. Don't volunteer information. Here's something to think about too. If you have bumperstickers or signs in your house saying Trespassers will be shot, or something similar, get rid of them before you start carrying. A good prosecutor can use this against you, using this as "This evil man was looking to shoot someone". The same thing applies if you reload your own ammo. Never carry handloads in your protection firearm. I've heard prosecutors say "This person was looking to kill, he wasn't satisfied with factory ammo, so he loaded his own special killer bullets"! It can happen.
In the aftermath of a shooting, even if completely justified, you will have PTSD. You may not want to go out in public, may have nightmares, and flashbacks. All our lives we have been told that killing is evil, etc. This may effect your relationships, so don't be afraid to see a counselor or a psychiatrist. That doesn't mean you are weak or mentally ill. You have survived a terrible situation, and may need help to get back to a reasonably calm life. At the same time, you may find the people around you acting different or avoiding you. The stigma of taking another persons life may be too much for some people to deal with. Let them go, it's not your fault.
I would also Highly recommend attending a shooting school, like Lethal Force Institute, which will show that you have been responsible about carrying a firearm, and also, LFI will send a expert witness to testify on your behalf if you do end up being charged with a crime.
I personally recommend reading good literature on the responsibility and consequences of using a firearm for self defense, such as Armed and Female, by Paxton Quigley, and In the Gravest Extreme, By Massad Ayoob, who owns and operates the Lethal Force Institute.
Believe me, I am not trying to discourage anyone who is willing to take on the responsibility of carrying a gun for protection. On the contrary, I encourage good people to arm themselves. Just remember that it is a tremendous responsibility, and prepare yourself properly, so you can live a healthy life with your loved ones safe.
Thank you all for reading this. I will have another part of my articles on carrying for the novice out soon, so stay safe, my friends, and I'll see you soon with more info.
Facebook. Instagram. Doomsday Preppers. Webcams. Photos. Most everywhere you look, you can find images of proud preppers and their well, preps. Got a new bunker in your backyard? Post pictures on the internet for all to see. Are you a fan of a certain brand of firearm? Put a bumper sticker of that gun manufacturer’s logo on your car. All of these things may seem like minor issues, but at the end of the day, they are anything but minor.
Operational security is a military term that essentially means the security necessary to deny the enemy any useful information about what you are doing, and it’s not just a term for military folks, either. It has lots of ramifications into the civilian prepper world – guidelines that most people who term themselves preppers ought to be following.
Consider that little good can come from revealing your plans to anyone outside your family unit. The information you inadvertently reveal about your preparations and plans is almost certain to arouse suspicion with authorities at various levels, not to mention opportunistic criminals. It’s not that preppers are engaged in any illegal activities – to whit, the overwhelming majority of those that take on the moniker of prepper or survivalist are overwhelmingly law abiding – it’s just that certain activities are twisted by some people into something they are not. A certain person might enjoy shooting, and acquire a perfectly legal gun collection only to be branded as “having an arsenal.” Another person might have a huge food stockpile and be termed a “hoarder” or even implicated of being insane.
The reasons for these perceptions mainly have to do with America’s shift to more leftist political leanings and general moral decay. There isn’t much that can be done about that problem, but there is much you can do about remaining operationally secure in your preps and not arouse attention. Here are some tips:
Keep your mouth shut: It’s important to not volunteer more information than people need to know in any given conversation. Be wary about revealing too much information to strangers – if you’re thinking right now that you don’t talk to strangers, consider your average store purchase. If you buy a cart full of canned goods and the cashier asks if you’re planning for World War III, don’t take the bait. Oftentimes, store clerks and low level store employees act as tipsters to higher level people.
Watch what you say in texts and email: Assume that nothing is secure with these forms of communication. Never write anything that would even be perceived as incriminating or reveal a clue as to what your preparations are. Best to not write it down for any reason, since as soon as you hit send, the communication is forever gone and no longer your property.
Be wary of posting photos on the Internet: Besides vain bragging, what is to be gained by posting a photo of that new rifle or that pantry full of canned goods stacked from floor to ceiling? Even if you think the photo reveals little in terms of location, consider that many smartphones will attach a GPS coordinate to the metadata in the photo. This invisible geotag is by default on unless you disable it, and many people unwittingly send photos all over cyberspace with their full GPS coordinates embedded within. It’s an elementary process to see the geotag as well – anyone can do it within 30 seconds. Now that distant retreat cabin is no longer in a secure, undisclosed location – it is at precisely X GPS coordinates!
Keep your ride anonymous: Don’t put little stickers on your car that show how many are in your family, where your son or daughter is an honor student at, or anything else that reveals where you live. Even car dealer license plate frames that show were you bought the car can even be used against you. Make sure your car has nothing on the outside that easily identifies you, and leave the interior devoid of items that would do the same.
Keep your home anonymous: Do you often leave your garage door open so that passersby can see what’s inside? Consider that they can not only see the contents, but get a visual on where the interior door is that leads to the home and even what kind of lock is on it. At night, all drapes should be closed, making it harder for people to see in your home. All it takes is a clear night, open drapes, and a dime store telescope for someone to completely map out the layout of your home.
Operational security is essentially a big fancy word that means common sense. The less you tell others – not only by your spoken word but by your printed word, photographs or any other revealing information – the better off you will be.

What is your plan if you hear gunshots in you work space? Run? Hide? Fight? The Navy Yard shooting in Washington, D.C., last year puts active shooter preparedness on the front burner once again. According to the news media coverage, the gunman was a contractor with access to the Navy Yard making him an insider threat to the men and women working at the Navy Yard. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), on average, active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes.
Before law enforcement arrives on the scene, individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter situation. These situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly, so it is imperative to know your plan ahead of time. During a crisis is not the time to start thinking about your plan. It is also important to exercise your plan periodically to maintain proficiency.
Next week, all U.S. Navy installations will exercise their active shooter plans during the annual exercise SOLID CURTAIN-CITADEL SHIELD 2014 (SC-CS14). SC-CS14 is a Force Protection exercise conducted by Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFF) and Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) on all CONUS Navy installations from Feb. 24-28.
SC-CS 14 uses realistic scenarios to ensure U.S. Navy security forces maintain a high level of readiness to respond to changing and dynamic threats. Scenarios can include exercising different threat conditions, which can lead to some traffic delays. No significant delays are anticipated during the week of SC-CS 14 for NAS Lemoore, but base personnel and community members may experience minor traffic back-ups during this time, so please plan accordingly.
The time to develop a plan is now:
-Identify multiple evacuation routes, and know your assembly areas.
-Account for any special need requirements.
-Maintain an accurate personnel roster.
-Designate hiding rooms / locations, and develop a barricade plan.
-Consider developing alternate communication signals / codes; however, this is not effective against an insider threat like the Navy Yard shooter.
-Locate at least two exits when visiting other offices/buildings.
Responding to an Active Shooter Situation: The action you choose is contingent upon the situation near you. Stay calm and do not pull or respond to the fire alarm.
RUN if safe to do so.
HIDE if you are in an office.
-Lock and barricade the door.
-Cover the windows, turn off the lights.
-Silence electronic devices.
-Remain silent and stay in place.
-Prepare to fight and look for something to use as a weapon.
TAKE COVER if you are outside.
-Put something between you and the shooter.
-If near a vehicle, hide near the vehicle’s engine if possible.
FIGHT if you are in imminent danger.
-Negotiation is not an option.
-Disrupt or disable the attacker by any means available.
-Be aggressive, incapacitate the attacker.
CALL 911 as soon as possible and provide the following information:
-Location of shooter(s).
-Number of shooter(s).
-Physical description of the shooter(s).
-Number / type of weapons.
-Use or threat of explosives / improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
-Whether or not they are still shooting.
Do not pull or respond to fire alarm (unless an official announcement is made).
Be prepared. An Active Shooter situation is fast moving, and law enforcement may not be on scene right away. It is important to remain calm and let your training take over. Know when to run, hide, and fight!
Protecting our Navy installations is extremely important. Safeguarding our Navy personnel, families, veterans, retirees, base visitors, and equipment at home is the first step in mission accomplishment. The ability to safeguard our Naval installations allows us to keep our homeland safe.
If you have a bug out bag, you’ve likely stocked it with items like a knife, flashlight, lighter, energy bars, first aid kit, compass, duct tape, water purifier, etc. But what about all of your family’s important documents: your IDs, passports, birth certificates, social security cards, identifying photos, marriage certificates, firearm identifications, banking information, etc? In an emergency situation, these documents are an absolute must-have. A USB flash drive takes up very little space and can store scans of all of your family’s important documents.
But what if you lose this USB flash drive or someone steals it? Someone else could have access to your family’s most private data. Your identities could be stolen, your bank accounts ransacked, your lives ruined. That’s why you must encrypt the data with encryption software like Truecrypt. Truecrypt is serious encryption and it’s free. You can use it to encrypt information not only on your emergency USB, but also on your computer…I keep all of my banking and online account passwords in an encrypted file on my computer.
I keep a fully loaded encrypted flash drive in my bug out bag, and I take it with me whenever I travel with my family. In addition to all of my family’s important documents, I also keep it loaded with a cache of survival PDFsand movies. Amazon has every kind of flash drive, and their prices are unbeatable…here are a few I’ve used and recommend:
