The Bugout Meter Page
By Richard A. Fleetwood - May 2001
Is the term "Bugout" new to you? Basically, it's a word used as a verb, to describe what is basically RETREAT from THREAT. With ALL the bad things going on in this world, in this nation, and even in our very own neighborhoods, it is hard to get COMPLETELY comfortable unless you can afford the latest absolutely state of the art security system. Even your movements outside your home can be impeded by either manmade or natural events, and so many things can happen in the time of the blink of an eye that you should ALWAYS have other options for food/water/shelter/whatever...somewhere close at hand.
I am not sure where the term BUGOUT originally started, though I suspect sometime in the Viet Nam war era. When things got really hot in battle zones, our soldiers would fall back if they could to the safest areas they could find, and "Bugging Out" somehow got coupled with the action.
So, how does a BUGOUT of any kind fit into your life? Ever had to leave from somewhere really, incredibly, unbelievably fast? So fast you forgot things....like car keys, wallets, pants, underwear, etc? Ok, maybe not underwear, but you see my point.
Basically, to bug out is to relocate yourself and your loved ones to SAFER areas than where you currently are. Having a kit such as a 72 hour kit, with food, water, extra clothes, meds, 1st aid supplies, and any other thing to help you thru 3 days of ABSOLUTELY no support will get your thru ANY disaster in urban or rural areas, until local governments can get to you and relocate you to safer places....OR in event of REAL threat, such as attack, away from your home to rural areas, and hold you over a day or two until backup living arrangements can be made.
Even something as everyday as a automobile accident in a rural area ( I've been there!) and being stuck away from civilization will be eased by having a kit of ANY kind with you. You will always feel better knowing you have the tools, and confidence, to exist on your very own wits and knowledge, with a 72 hour kit an arms reach away, whereever you are in the world....IF you planned ahead.
So what is a BUGOUT METER? A late friend of mine, Brett Thomas of Detroit, coined the phrase a couple years ago. He and I were working on N.A.S. together, when he died, and I thought the idea was a great one, and implemented it with this first graph as you see here. My ultimate goal with the BUGOUT METER is to maintain a real time, up to the minute, status of worldwide events and threat analysis, using web programming techniques ( some I still need to learn ) to produce a one single number threat analysis on THIS page, coalesced from many other numbers which are all basically ratings of threats in many areas. The spreadsheet used to create the chart below is my first attempt, and taught me a few things I needed to know to plan this project.
If you are familiar with the DEFCON status used by the US Military to signify DEFense CONditions of the USA, based on perceived threats at any given time, then you have an idea where I am going with this page. I am creating a THRECON status, or THREat CONdition system to help YOU be aware of all those SCARY things that can actually harm or kill you in any given day of your life.
Stay Tuned....More to come, with updated charts, and more discussion of WHY you can use this page to THINK AHEAD.
Thanks for dropping in, and check this page every so often.
